Seven towns or conurbations in Lorraine, Alsace and Franche-Comté support the Park des Vosges Regional Natural Park. Belfort has always benefited from a great location. Nestled between Southern Vosges Mountains and Jura foothills, it became a major communication channel as early as the prehistoric times. The city’s strategic setting has always played an important role in its history, turning it into a military fortified site and army garrison at the borders of the Rhine and the Rhône regions. Historically, it belongs to the Haute-Alsace, yet Belfort has always been part of the Francophone community like the Alsatian Welche Valleys. The Vauban fortified ensemble on which the famous Lion of Bartholdi is proudly perched, the city centre and its colourful façades turn Belfort into a very agreeable city! Its cultural life is intense, with many festivals (Eurockéennes, Festival International de Musique Universitaire, Génériq, EntreVues…) and its exceptional environmental setting is prized by nature lovers who take full advantage of all the activities on offer: hikes, skiing, gliding and hot air balloon flights, water sports, river fishing… agglo-belfort.com
