These marcaires, cowherds and cheese makers welcomed the first hikers towards the end of the nineteenth century: botanists and other curious travellers, to whom they offered a simple meal and bedding above the stable. This type of inn developed with the creation of a Club Vosgien in 1872. Encouraged by official accreditation in 1971, the Farmhouse-Inns Association proposed a charter to its members, who are first and foremost farm operators; this charter is based on hospitality, farm products use, architectural setting and environmental function. On the Park Territory, 43 farmhouse-inns are members of the Farmhouse-Inns Association in the Haut-Rhin region, and 4 farmhouse-inns are members of the Bienvenue à la Ferme (Welcome to the Farm) Label by 4 Chambres d’Agriculture des Vosges (Vosgian Chambers of Agriculture). Regional dishes are served there, produced by local farms in a friendly and welcoming setting. Some even offer accommodation, in dorm or guest rooms.
